THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Thanksgiving took an unexpected turn for a family when officials said a 12-year-old girl got trapped after the large hole she was digging in the sand caved in.
Officials say just before 5 p.m. on Thursday, several agencies responded to the Spring Creek trail near the end of Pruitt Road in The Woodlands after getting a report that a child was trapped in a cave-in.
First responders say they were directed to a sandbar on the west bank of Panther Creek, just south of a pedestrian bridge. There, they found the girl stuck in the sand with only her head showing.
The Woodlands Fire Department said the girl and her family were out together when she dug a large hole in the sand. Not long after, the sand gave way and buried her.
According to TWFD, the girl’s father quickly went to her and cleared the sand from around her head so she could breathe.
Officials said crews acted fast to clear the area and pull the girl out of the sand.
The young girl was checked out by paramedics and released to her parents.
