2 Houston attorneys warn fake legal website, The Walkers Law Firm, duping immigrant families with real law firm addresses

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Two Houston lawyers are warning immigrant families about sending money to a mysterious law firm website that is using their addresses as places of business.

Neither lawyer practices immigration law, and they are worried that desperate families are being duped.

The common theme here appears to be the name “Walker.” The website in question is titled “The Walkers Law Firm.” The entire website is in Spanish and advertises immigration services. However, under the “contacts” section, it lists three law firm office locations, two in Houston and one in Georgia.

All three locations are real law firms with a lawyer named “Walker.” None practices immigration law.

“I’ve been a personal injury lawyer for 45 years,” James Walker, showing off an office filled with awards and articles, said.

However, he was shocked a few weeks ago when a man walked into his office, asking to fill out paperwork to get his daughter out of ICE detention. He then began receiving calls about immigration. Confused, Walker and his staff began investigating. That’s how they stumbled upon this random website with his address attached.

“It turns out it’s just a group of people, con artists out of Lithuania, taking innocent, poor people’s money, hundreds of dollars, thousands of dollars. They just take their money and disappear,” he said.

The internet registration documents appear to list the website as based in Lithuania, with a WhatsApp phone number.

At that point, Walker’s team contacted the other Houston attorney listed on the website, Mekisha Walker, who practices only criminal law.

“I don’t do immigration work. I don’t see anything wrong with immigration work. I don’t do it. It is a shame, a crime, to take these poor people’s money, steal money from them. They’re nothing but thieves,” Mekisha Walker said.

“It was very stressful to me because someone, whoever is on the other end of the WhatsApp, is taking advantage of a very stressful situation,” Mekisha Walker said from her downtown office. “Potentially, their family is in ICE custody, and they’re paying every bit of money they have to an attorney, and it turns out they never hired an attorney.”

ABC13 called the WhatsApp number listed on the website. The person on the other end wouldn’t answer the phone, but did respond to messages we typed in Spanish. They responded that they answered immigration questions. However, when we asked if they were legitimate lawyers, they would not answer the questions directly.

Both real attorneys named Walker have reported the website to the State Bar and the Texas Supreme Court. Mekisha Walker said she has “reported to every agency I can think of.”

Their point in speaking out is that while they are concerned about bad Google reviews and angry clients, their bigger concern is for the families.

“They are preying on people during their most vulnerable time,” Mekisha Walker said.

“This money is going to countries where people don’t even know where they are?” James Walker said. Where the hell is Lithunaia, you know?” she said.

Both legitimate attorneys want to remind people looking for attorneys that they can check the standing of any attorney on the Texas State Bar website, texasbar.com, to make sure the attorney is licensed to practice and up to date on all fees before paying them.
