3 people killed in multi-vehicle crash involving intoxicated driver near West Orem Drive near Almeda Road in SW Houston, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Three people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash involving a suspected intoxicated driver in southwest Houston on Sunday morning, the Houston Police Department said.

A total of five vehicles were damaged after a suspected intoxicated driver rammed through the intersection on West Orem Drive and Almeda Road, HPD said.

The driver of a gray Chrysler sedan was traveling southbound on Almeda Road with no headlights when they ran through a red light and struck a white Buick with multiple people inside, according to HPD Sgt. Rebecca Dallas.

Officials said two men were pronounced dead at the scene and a woman was rushed to the hospital, where she died from her injuries. The driver at fault was also taken to the hospital, where their condition is critical.

HPD says the three deceased victims were inside the Buick.

Officials added that surveillance video from a nearby gas station is being used as evidence in the investigation.

Three vehicles waiting at the intersection were also hit, but all of those injured were treated and released at the scene, Dallas said.

“If you plan on drinking, just go ahead and get a rideshare so you can get home safely and so the streets of Houston are safe,” Dallas said.

Laquita Washington, who survived the crash, said her heart went out to those who died, and she is thankful to be alive.

“It happened so fast that I didn’t even know what was happening,” Washington said. “Now all I can do is thank God, honestly,” she added.

HPD confirms the driver of the Chrysler was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

HPD stated that the intersection was closed for several hours while they conducted their investigation.
