ABC13 had questions about how this could’ve happened.
According to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office, the suspects are being held without bail due to the severity of their charges and their escape.
Authorities said the suspects are teenagers ranging from 17 to 19 years old.
Police said they were initially arrested Sunday morning, after an aggravated robbery at a CVS on Crab River Road. They’re accused of assaulting a store clerk and two other employees before fleeing with a bag of cash just before 2 a.m.
But later that day, police said they managed to escape when a jailer went to check on one of the teens and was then assaulted by one of the suspects. They said that the suspect then allegedly released the other prisoners.
The police chief said within minutes, law enforcement responded to search for those inmates.
About an hour and a half later, police said the suspects were found near First Colony Church of Christ, about a mile away from the jail.
ABC13 asked Sugar Land PD about their protocols at the jail for checking inmates in their cells and whether anything will change after this.
Authorities haven’t answered that question yet.
According to the city’s website, the detention center is staffed with a sergeant and five detention officers. ABC13 asked how many people were on duty at the time, but we’re waiting to hear back on that, too.
Police said those four suspects are now at the Fort Bend County Jail, where they face additional charges of escape, causing severe bodily injury, and aggravated assault on a public servant.
Sugar Land Police Chief Pete Lara said this is under a criminal and administrative review. In a statement, he said, when things like this happen, they review their procedures.
