HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Vendors at a popular food truck park are responding to a councilman’s calls to shut it down.
It follows a series of complaints from nearby homeowners about the Galleria Food Truck Park on Chimney Rock near Westheimer.
“I’m convinced that the food truck operation is incompatible with the peace and tranquility of the neighborhood,” Bartt Shelton said.
Residents say they’ve seen people stunt driving, peeing in public, and blaring loud music since the truck park moved in.
“They stay open ’till 4 a.m. in the morning and that’s a really big problem,” Jack Downer said. “They need to close at 8 o’clock or 10 o’clock at night.”
Last Friday, around 11:30 p.m., an HOA camera captured a shooting across the street from the truck park.
“That’s kind of, like, a Houston problem. It’s not really a Galleria Food Truck problem,” Alex Ramirez, who owns Taco Fuego, said. “Of course I’d love for that to stop, but that’s kind of out of our control.”
Osman Toure, who owns The Philly Grill, said the truck park has hired security for high-traffic days like weekends.
He said they also run off illegal gamblers, but that their efforts have had little success.
“We’ve done our best as business owners to keep them off of our property, but it doesn’t really work when they can just stand by and wait for customers to pass and try to get to them that way,” Toure said.
But Councilman Edward Pollard said the truck park isn’t doing nearly enough.
“They can put more cameras, they can put more lighting, they can put more security, but they’re not doing so,” Pollard said.
Pollard said the truck park had previously agreed to hire a full-time off-duty police officer, but then ended the arrangement.
He said he’s now exploring ways to have the park shut down.
“I feel like it’s unfair treatment for the food vendors, like, we’re just here to really sell food and stuff and trying to make a living,” Ramirez said.
The owner of the truck park didn’t respond to a request for comment.
