HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Astros were eliminated from MLB postseason contention on Saturday night.
With the Cleveland Guardians beating the Texas Rangers on Saturday, the Astros will not be playing October baseball after the Guardians clinched a postseason berth. The last time that the Astros missed the playoffs was in 2016.
Through the course of the regular season, the ‘Stros were plagued by injuries to a handful of their core players, including Yordan Alvarez, Luis Garcia, Josh Hader, and Jeremy Peña, just to name a few.
Despite key departures from its stars, including Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker, this past season, the Astros also welcomed back a familiar face in Carlos Correa, who was traded back to Houston at the 2025 MLB trade deadline after departing the Astros in 2022.
The Astros now head into the offseason with the elephant in the room: the looming free agency of ace Framber Valdez, who won a World Series championship with Houston in 2022 and will now be one of the top starting pitchers available in the open market in 2026.
Houston currently sits in second place in the American League West division. The Astros will wrap up their regular season against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
