‘The Simpsons’ approach 800 episodes with big guest stars for new season including Michael Keaton, Viola Davis and Idris Elba

SAN DIEGO — “The Simpsons” is gearing up to celebrate its 800th episode, marking a major milestone for the longest-running animated American TV series.

The show’s creative team is teasing some seriously big-name guest stars for its 37th season.

Michael Keaton, Viola Davis, Barry Sonnenfeld, and Stephen Tobolowsky will appear in various roles, while Idris Elba is set to play a devil or demon of some sort.

Veteran guest star Albert Brooks is back to voice another character. Best known for his role as Hank Scorpio in season 8’s “You Only Move Twice,” Brooks most recently voiced the slick manager in “Yokel Hero.” He’s also brought to life characters like Jacques in “Life on the Fast Lane” and Tab Spangler in “The Heartbroke Kid.”

We caught up with “Simpsons” creator Matt Groening, writers Matt Selman, Michael Price and director David Silverman.

When pressed about a mystery guest star they couldn’t land, Selman revealed the star’s initials are “AG” – but wouldn’t say more.

On The Red Carpet’s George Pennacchio guessed Andrew Garfield or Al Gore. Selman laughed, saying, “These are all really good guesses. AG said no.”

Michael Price shared how thrilled the stars are to work on the show.

“It’s a great deal of fun for me to work with these amazing actors,” he said. “They come in excited, saying ‘I can’t believe I’m on The Simpsons,’ and we’re like, ‘We can’t believe we got you on The Simpsons.'”

Time magazine paid tribute to the milestone with a special cover spotlighting the family.

Groening joked, “You know you’re big when your name is bigger than the ‘Time’ logo.”

Adding to the praise, “The Simpsons” is once again nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, adding to the series’ impressive haul of over 100 nominations.

“I’m thrilled every time we get a nomination,” Price said. “It’s a huge, huge, huge deal; we never take it for granted.”

A new season of “The Simpsons” premieres September 28 on Disney+.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Disney+ and this ABC station.
