SPRING, Texas (KTRK) — Workers at an ATV shop in Spring say they’re concerned for their business because of the damage done at a property next door. They told ABC13 for weeks that people have been breaking into and stealing from model homes.
A spokesperson with the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office says they’ve arrested two people who they believe may have been trying to steal from Main Street America, located in Spring along the North Freeway.
If you drive up to the property, you’ll see broken light poles, cracked windows, and an empty parking lot. It’s what’s left of a business where people could check out custom-built homes.
“You’re looking at thousands, and thousands of dollars worth of damage,” Garrett Weatherly, who works at Bert’s Dirt Works nearby, said.
Weatherly works as a mechanic down the road at Bert’s Dirt Works and says after the property was sold, he started to see problems, particularly in the last few weeks.
“People were breaking in, they’ve ripped copper out of the walls, they’ve stolen all of the AC units. They’ve stolen the copper wire, I mean the big copper wire that was running from the main panel up to the MainStreet America sign,” Weatherly said.
ABC13 spoke with a worker from the company who owned the property, Design Tech Homes, and they confirmed it was sold. They didn’t say exactly when it happened or who bought it.
On Thursday morning, the Harris County Precinct 4’s Office said two people were arrested at MainStreet America for a possible theft. They didn’t say if the arrest was connected to any of the damage that was already done.
Weatherly feels, even with the arrests, other businesses should still be on alert.
“The amount of damage they’re willing to do and go through, to get the copper or to get whatever is worth something to sell, to make money, that worries us about what they’re willing to do these local businesses,” Weatherly said.
He’s making sure his shop is safe at all times.
“We have someone on the premises 24/7, always have security cameras,” he said.

Editor’s note: ABC13 mistakenly reported that Design Tech Homes had been shuttered. MainStreet America, previously owned by Design Tech Homes, was sold and later closed. Design Tech Homes remains in operation in the Houston area.
