Houston man accused of pointing rifle at young children, fiancée claims video shows otherwise

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Houston man is behind bars, accused of pointing a high-powered rifle at two young children outside their home in southeast Houston.

Steven Lynn Jackson, 61, faces two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A hearing officer set his bond at $75,000 for each charge, higher than the $50,000 per count requested by the state, citing public safety concerns.

According to court records, Jackson allegedly pointed the rifle at a neighbor’s two children, ages 1 and 4, at their apartment complex on Winkler. Their mother called Houston police, and officers later found Jackson in possession of the weapon.

Jackson’s fiancée, who asked not to be identified, says the allegations are unfounded and that their doorbell video shows what really happened. She said Jackson left their apartment Sunday evening carrying his rifle, but insists he did not threaten anyone. She says he was outside only to check the scope, and as soon as the children opened the door, he went back inside.

“It’s for hunting. Hunting deer or pig, not children,” she said. “That’s ridiculous. He’s got 5 grandkids and a new grandbaby. They all love him. They call him Papa.”

One neighbor told ABC13 that Jackson’s presence with a rifle in the family-oriented complex was alarming. The children’s mother left before ABC13 was able to speak to her.

Court officials also noted a potential threat made by Jackson as he was being escorted to a patrol car. The hearing officer said Jackson allegedly told the children’s mother, “I’m going to come back and get you,” which contributed to the higher bond.

His fiancée disputes that claim, saying Jackson “never talked to her” and “wasn’t even looking at her” at the time.

Court records show Jackson has no prior violent convictions in Harris County. His last conviction was for a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge in 2006, records show.
