Driver killed in Sunnyside shootout, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A man was killed in a shootout in a Sunnyside neighborhood on Tuesday morning.

Houston Police confirm the shooting happened around the same time a nearby home was burglarized. As of Tuesday evening, police were unable to publicly confirm if the two crimes were connected or not.

At approximately 10:40 a.m. Detective Cory Sharp said investigators were called to a shooting at the 7900 block of Comal Street.

Surveillance video shows a dark Cadillac pull up to the intersection of Red Bud and Comal Street and stop. A man on foot, carrying at least one bag, then approached the driver’s side window. A brief shootout occurred, and the man on foot dropped the bag in the intersection and ran out of frame. At the same time, the driver of the Cadillac crashed into a drainage ditch bordering a nearby yard.

ABC13 spoke with Bryon Shannon, who owns the home where the crash occurred.

“They did something they gonna regret now. One is breathing and the other one is in the morgue,” Shannon said.

Moments later, surveillance video captured two cars stopping over the bag. As the second vehicle pulled away, the bag vanished.

The homeowners of the home that was broken into at around the same time as the shooting told ABC13 the burglar or burglars accessed their breaker and cut their power — disabling surveillance cameras.

They said the thief, or thieves, threw a brick through a window, ransacked their home, and left electronics and black clothing in their backyard.

As one of the homeowners pulled into their driveway, they told ABC13 they witnessed a man on a bicycle, stolen from their garage, ride off with a large bag.
