HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — The Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of an overnight fire that it says sent six people, including three children, to the hospital.
The agency says the fire broke out around midnight on Pauline Street in Highlands, which is north of I-10 in east Harris County.
“Highlands Fire Department received a call around 12:15 a.m.,” Brandi Dumas with the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office said.
Dumas said most of the injuries are related to burns and smoke inhalation.
She said an elderly man was taken to the hospital by helicopter and is in critical condition as a result of his injuries.
An additional male is also in critical condition, according to the agency, but was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Three children and one female, who were also taken to the hospital by ambulance, are stable at the moment, according to the fire marshal’s office.
“Two people had to be rescued from the building while it was burning,” Dumas said. “And one person actually jumped out of the window.”
Dumas said fires like this one are a stark reminder to have a fire escape plan and to ensure the smoke detectors in your home are in proper working condition.
