18-year-old shot and killed while selling vape pens on Briar Terrace Drive in Alief neighborhood, investigators say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An 18-year-old high school student shot and killed in an Alief neighborhood on Oct. 25 was selling vape pens at the time, investigators say.

Surveillance video shows Alan Tavera crashing into a parked pickup truck on Briar Terrace Drive that night after being shot.

On Wednesday, the Houston Police Department released new surveillance video showing five persons of interest and a white pickup truck, which they describe as a vehicle of interest.

Tavera’s mother said he had celebrated his 18th birthday just weeks earlier.

“This house is empty without him. This house revolved around him. He was the only child,” Brisa Tavera said.

She said her son was headed to a Halloween party the night he was killed and had planned to pick up friends along the way.

She said he never made it to any of their houses.

After seeing the video police released, she believes the persons of interest could be young themselves and urged their parents to turn them in.

“I’m sure that they can’t sleep at night. I’m sure that they are thinking constantly about what they did,” she said.

Seldom does a moment pass when she’s not forced to confront all that she’s lost.

“I don’t know how to live life without him. He was my heartbeat, he was my life, he was my everything,” she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
