HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A pastor on Houston’s north side says his church has been broken into several times in one week and he wants the person responsible to be caught.
Leaders at New Life Baptist Church of Northside, located at Melbourne and Tuscon Streets, say the church has been targeted at least three times. They told ABC13 the first break-in happened last week, when both of their AC units were stolen. Later, they say technical equipment, musical instruments, the PA system and copper wire from the roof were also stolen
Houston Police have confirmed they are investigating the situation.
On Thursday afternoon, a church deacon swept shattered glass from the ground near the front door. The door handle was also on the ground, showing signs of yet another break-in at the church.
“This is where he went through the church ceiling and got all the wiring and the copper that was in there,” Deacon Albert Taylor Jr. said. “To walk into a church and steal from God’s house and God’s people…yeah, he needs help.”
“Those air conditioners are going to be hard to replace because we don’t have the money to replace them with. Our PA system? We can get by, we just have to talk a little louder,” Pastor Leslie Busby said.
“He destroyed what God built, and that’s really hard for us to understand,” Busby said.
Church leaders say their alarm system failed and did not notify them.
On Tuesday, the church added security cameras, and by the next morning, they captured footage of a man at the side door trying to break in.
“I was real sad. But I’m trusting in the Lord that the Lord will make a way and he’ll fix it for us,” Busby said.
