HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Police Department said a man is in custody after allegedly crashing into parked cars and killing a woman who was trying to step around them.
HPD says the crash happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday on McGowen near Nettleton in the city’s Third Ward.
Police say the driver of a Mercedes SUV hit a car that police say was legally parked on McGowen. That pushed the car into another parked car and then onto the woman.
The impact of the crash threw the woman underneath another parked car.
Police say the driver was taken to the hospital after complaining about some injuries.
HPD said it was determined that the man was not impaired, but officers said they do believe the driver may have been speeding.
So far, the woman who was killed has not been identified.
“There is a driveway on that side of the road, and there was a car parked in that driveway, and the sidewalk kind of meanders around it, so she kind of had to step into the street off the curb, just for a couple of steps. It is a very tragic circumstance that those few steps were the last steps she took,” HPD Sgt. David Rose said.
HPD says that, because of the type of car the man was driving, they can download information from it that will likely give them insight into what was happening in the moments before the crash.
