Mayor Whitmire and Houston Police start initiative to add extra patrols around 610 near I-10

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — If you drive on the North Loop from I-10 West to I-10 East, you might notice an increased law enforcement presence.

Mayor John Whitmire announced on the Houston Police Department’s social media that there will be increased patrols to crack down on reckless driving, speeding, and road rage. The initiative runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, according to officials.

This plan is similar to an HPD initiative earlier this year. City officials told ABC13 that over three days in June, 83 extra officers fanned out across the North Freeway, Eastex Freeway, South Loop, and SH-288 to crack down on what officials called aggressive driving.

This came in response to the Houston Police Department reporting more than 300 road rage incidents in both 2023 and 2024.

ABC13 requested the records and learned that over those three days, police issued 469 tickets.

The most ticketed offense was speeding and driving on the shoulder, according to the records.

As for whether road rage has gone down this year, ABC13’s latest figures show the number of incidents remains very close to where it was in 2024.
