DICKINSON, Texas (KTRK) — For the first time, Dickinson neighbors can light fireworks on New Year’s and not get in trouble for doing so.
To celebrate 2026, some Dickinson neighbors, including Mike Hernandez, are turning to fireworks.
“Boom. Just look up into the sky and enjoy,” Hernandez said.
While he enjoys it, lighting the firework could have gotten Hernandez into trouble in the past.
This year it’s different. City council changed the ordinance allowing fireworks to be used for New Year’s.
“It makes it wonderful,” Hernandez said. “You don’t have to worry about law enforcement impeding your celebrations.”
The city council made the change a few weeks ago. Officials said they agreed to allow fireworks on New Year’s and Independence Day after voters approved an item last year.
“I know we’re not the first to do it, but I can guarantee we’re not going to be the last,” Dickinson City Council member Kevin Edmonds said.
League City also made a change recently, and allowed neighbors to use fireworks this year. It doesn’t mean the rules are the same.
For example, in League City, you can’t discharge fireworks at an apartment. That’s not the case in Dickinson, where there’s no such restriction.
City leaders said that could change in the future. Another thing they said could change is where neighbors can buy fireworks.
“I think sale will be a consideration in the future,” Edmonds explained. “It’s not an absolute necessity. The sales tax generation is what we would like to have out of it.”
While some are loosening firework rules, others are cracking down, including Rosenberg. The city shared an image on social media saying, “Seriously! No fireworks. Zip. Zero. Not even a sparkler.”
Council members say safety is a concern. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said last year, nearly 14,700 people were hurt, and eleven people died.
They say sparklers even sent 1,700 to the emergency room. Dickinson officials say safety is part of its ordinance change.
Users have to be 18 years old, not under the influence, and debris must be cleaned.
