HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — As the clock winds down to the end of another year, Noe Sanchez can take in the calm and soothing sounds from his front yard.
While it’s a place of peace for him, the fence surrounding his home on Firnat Street in north Houston still has a bullet hole from this very day one year ago.
“The bullet passed. I was over there, and it hit the fence,” Sanchez said.
Sanchez says he was filling up a water fountain when a stray bullet busted through his fence.
His scalp was grazed, and he says he was rushed to urgent care, where he spent about six hours.
“All I have to say is, thank God. It was really, really, close to my brain,” said Sanchez.
This case was just one of hundreds that happened in Houston on New Year’s Eve in 2024.
The Houston Chronicle reports that last year, the Houston Police Department received 300 calls about gunfire. In 2023, the number of calls was 670.
Dr. Greg Fremin, who was with HPD for more than three decades, recalls what it’s like for officers working on New Year’s Eve.
“Sounds like a war zone at midnight. Leading up to about 10 minutes before midnight, gunfire starts erupting. And literally, I mean, and I’ll be quite very truthful with you, we tell our officers to be very vigilant,” said Dr. Greg Fremin.
Fremin says there’s no such thing as celebratory gunfire since firing a gun into the air is considered a class B misdemeanor.
He went on to say the act itself is not only dangerous but harmful to communities.
“So they’re pulling all these officers away from other calls that are happening, violent felon needs that are occurring, crimes in progress.” Fremin described.
While people are celebrating, Fremin urges them to be vigilant of their surroundings.
For Sanchez, he plans to stay in with his loved ones as he gets ready for 2026.
“Just stay in the house, family coming in, every time we cook something,” Sanchez said.
