2 18-year-olds killed in fiery crash after crashing into freeway sign off the South Loop near Telephone Road, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Two 18-year-olds died when the driver of a pickup truck lost control and crashed into a freeway sign off the South Loop, according to the Houston Police Department.

HPD said the crash happened on I-610 near Broad Street around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday.

A white pickup truck with three people inside was going fast when the driver lost control and crashed into a freeway sign, according to Sgt. Mike Barrow.

Barrow said the truck caught fire, and a good Samaritan stopped to help the driver get out.

“Unfortunately, they weren’t able to reach the other two passengers, who sadly were pronounced deceased at the scene,” Barrow said.

Barrow said the two victims were a man and a woman, both 18 years old.

HPD said the freeway sign was severely damaged, and TxDOT will likely need to close the road for major repairs.

Barrow said the investigation is ongoing, including whether speed, alcohol, or another substance may have played a role.
