CYPRESS, Texas (KTRK) — ABC13’s Athlete of the Week features the Bello sisters from Cy Ranch High School.
Zora is a senior setter and a Rice signee, while Sade is a high-flying sophomore outside hitter.
The Mustangs have been eliminated by The Woodlands in the second round over the past five years. This year, they got past the Highlanders and have reached the state semifinal round for the first time in school history. They play Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against the No. 1 team in the nation, Byron Nelson, in Haltom City.
Meanwhile, Cy Ranch volleyball is having a historic season.
“We play better when we’re having fun,” Mustangs head coach Dr. Collea McKinney said. “So that’s why I tell them before each game, like, ‘Hey, go have some fun.'”
Big contributors to the fun, excitement, and wins are the Bello Sisters.
“It doesn’t get any better than just playing with your blood,” Senior setter Zora Bello said. “It’s just that I can trust her. She can trust me. It’s just very fun.”
Zora is the smiling senior setter who signed with Rice on Thursday.
“They’re both really goofy,” Coach McKinney said. “Zora is like a leader by example.”
Sade is the high-flying sophomore, cherishing every point with her big sister this season.
“I just push her as she pushes me,” Sade Bello said. “Every single practice, every single game, just to make it to the end.”
“She makes me look good,” Zora said. “So just getting it to her at the right height, getting her involved in all the plays is just really. It’s a blast.”
“This is the last time to play together, ever,” Zora said. “So we just really wanted to put everything on the table. Me and her had a pep talk about how we are going to make it to the end because this is our last year, and I’m never going to be able to play with her again.”
Cy Ranch’s next challenge is a big one.
“We know people doubted us, but we knew we could lean on each other and just come all the way,” the older Bello sister Zora said.
They will face the No. 1 team in the nation, Byron Nelson, in round one of the 6a Division I state semifinals on Saturday afternoon.
“I know that we and the team can make it all the way,” the younger Bello sister, Sade, said.
Mustangs are just two wins away from being crowned state champions.
“They love each other,” coach said. “They enjoy being around each other. They’re silly, and I’m loving every bit of it. And they are, too.”
