ABC13 Athlete of the Week: Pasadena High School’s Caryme Molina leading volleyball team to new heights

PASADENA, Texas (KTRK) — Pasadena High School senior Caryme Molina is a four-year starter that has the Eagles volleyball program flying high.

“Whenever we beat those big schools or whenever we have a good season or whenever we have like things like this, people weren’t expecting to see us,” Molina said.

She has set records and milestones along the way with 1,500 kills, 2,000 assists and 1,500 digs. When you win, and produce numbers like she has, it elevates the program for years to come.

“Obviously, I’m going to feel accomplished by doing that, but I want to set those bars for people and break exactly what they did,” she said.

“My name is Coach Martinez and I’m the head coach at Pasadena, our player today is Caryme Molina and she is my daughter,” Pasadena head coach Carmen Martinez said.

She’s on this journey with her mom on the bench. “I can brag about that”, Molina said. “That’s my mom. I mean, she’s not only my coach. That’s my mom.”

Her mom, Carmen, was an accomplished player for the Eagles back in the day; now a successful coach.

“She’s grown up in this gym,” Martinez said. “She’s seen so many great kids walk through here and she’s a mesh of all of them.”

“Over the years, I got to watch a lot of them just grow as athletes and maybe put some of those tools that they had in my own toolbox,” daughter Molina said.

“For her to come home and be successful and just want other people to know that they too can do that. It’s okay to come from Pasadena and a rep it,” Coach Martinez said.

Caryme will rep Pasadena next year at UTEP, studying media production with big goals ahead.

“Taking it maybe into like the NFL, MLB, NBA, something with that and then maybe after some years I want to get my certification and teaching and become a kindergarten teacher,” Molina said.

The Eagles are currently in second place in 18-5A looking to make the playoffs for the fifth straight year.
