HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — On Tuesday morning, people who live in the Acres Homes area and those driving through probably did a “double take” after seeing a boat in the middle of the road.
“A boat? Really? Hold on, hold on, a boat?” neighbor Gerald Jones said. “What is a boat doing in the middle of the street? That’s on the north side only in Acres Home.”
Neighbors told ABC13 it isn’t unusual to see people use the area as a dumping ground, but this time, the trash on South Lane near Ferguson Road included a boat blocking the right of way.
“Yeah, somebody dumped a boat in the middle of the street on South Lane,” Brandon Gourley, who has lived in the area for 30 years, said.
On Tuesday morning, ABC13 saw police along South Lane and a tow truck that pushed the boat off the road into a ditch. It’s unclear why it wasn’t towed away.
“It throws me off. That’s strange. What else are you willing to move in the middle of the street and just leave it there?” neighbor Trina Jenkins said.
Miss Trina Jenkins has lived in the area for 20 years and said that lately they’ve had to deal with people who use their community as a dumping ground.
Piles and piles of all kinds of things are tossed in so many different streets around this community.
“Car parts, trash, they do it all the time,” Gourley said. “The city doesn’t show any initiative to take care of it. They have the same issue in South Park, Fifth Ward, and other black neighborhoods, so I like to see them come out here and ride around and see if they’d like to live like that.”
People told ABC13 they want to see solutions in the area.
“It’s an eyesore, and I don’t like looking at eyesores,” Jenkins said.
“Tell me now who did that? That’s why we need to get into it and find out what this illegal dumping is about,” Jones said.
On Tuesday afternoon, ABC13 is awaiting a response from city reps about the illegal dumping and the boat.
