Child gets second-degree burns from Humble ISD playground slide at Park Lakes Elementary

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — An Humble ISD mother says her special education daughter received second-degree burns after using the slide at her school’s playground.

Humble ISD confirmed Tuesday it’s launched an investigation into the matter.

Teresa Moncada said her 10-year-old daughter, Savanah, was using one of the slides at Park Lakes Elementary last Thursday during recess.

“I went down the slide, and I burned myself,” Savanah told Eyewitness News.

Savanah said she went down the slide three times until it was too much for her to bear.

“She has spina bifida, so for her lower extremities she doesn’t feel what we would feel, so for her it might be like a little burn, not nothing that we would feel if that was on us,” Moncada said.

Moncada said she was summoned to the nurse’s office by her daughter’s teacher and was horrified by what she saw when she arrived.

“I’m a strong mom, but I broke down after seeing that. I couldn’t even talk,” she said.

The young girl was taken to the emergency room, where Moncada said doctors told her Savanah had second-degree burns.

Humble ISD released the following statement:

“The well-being of every child matters. After a staff member noticed marks on the student’s skin, the school nurse recommended the child be seen by a doctor. No other students were injured. The district is reviewing video and interviewing staff as part of the investigation. We remain committed to keeping our campuses safe for all children.”

“Things need to change because if it’s 95 outside, it’s 100 and plus on the slide,” Leo Lemus, Savanah’s father, said.

In June, Humble ISD posted about the playground being named the second “best inclusive” in the nation.

Moncada said she’s not blaming the school or her daughter’s teacher but would like for all teachers to “be more aware of them, you know, especially the little special ones.”

She also said parents should be mindful of how they dress their children.

“We never really put her in shorts and that was the second time in her whole school life that we put her in shorts, and that’s gonna be the last as well,” Moncada said.
