City of Deer Park told apartment residents that water will be cut off after landlord didn’t pay bill

DEER PARK, Texas (KTRK) — Time is ticking for how much longer people living in a Deer Park apartment complex will have water after a notice was posted on Thursday. The City of Deer Park said the water will be shut off next Wednesday due to non-payment from the apartment complex to the city.

“How do you trust somebody that you’ve been paying your water bill, but they haven’t been paying it? What are they using that money for?” Lauren Johann, who lives at the apartment complex, said.

Johann has lived there for two years. She said they’ve had water pressure and plumbing problems, but never anything like this.

“Obviously, this has been an ongoing issue that they’ve known about, and they haven’t notified us at all,” Johann said.

In a statement, the city wrote in part:

“The City of Deer Park consistently notifies account holders, including property management entities, regarding delinquent utility balances. Despite multiple attempts to resolve the outstanding debt and repeated warnings over the past few months, the falls of Deer Park apartment complex ownership neglect to satisfy the accumulated balance for water usage by the effective cutoff date.”

For people like Brenda Peterson, who has lived at the Falls of Deer Park apartments for five years, she’s worried about the lingering impacts the water shutoff could have on her neighbors.

“You got to take baths and flush the commode. That’s a health problem right there,” Brenda Peterson, who lives at the apartment, said.

Peterson said she doesn’t know what to do next.

“Find out if we should pay the rent or what, I don’t know who to talk to,” Peterson said.

ABC13 reached out to the management. They said they have no comment and said residents will be notified when everything is fixed.
