Cleveland ISD bus driver admitted to being distracted when bus overturned with 57 students inside, records say


CLEVELAND, Texas (KTRK) — A TxDOT crash report obtained by ABC13 reveals new details about an Aug. 13 Cleveland ISD school bus crash.

Records state the 21-year-old driver told investigators he was “distracted” and drove off the road, where the bus hit an embankment, and traveled more than 240 feet before eventually coming to rest on its side.

According to the report, 57 students were on the bus at the time of the crash. ABC13 confirmed that the children are students at Southside Elementary School. Records state that 52 of the students were taken to the hospital.

The other five were immediately released to their families.

The bus was one of three Cleveland ISD buses to crash within the same week. It was one of two that crashed along the same stretch of FM 1010.
