Data shows flu cases are rising and could get worse following the holidays

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — With flu cases rising, health experts said if you’re reaching for tissues after holiday gatherings, there could be a reason why.

CDC DATA SHOWS POSITIVE FLU CASES ARE DOUBLING

The most recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention figures show the amount of positive flu cases is rising. Nationwide, about 15 percent of lab cases are coming back positive.

That’s double from the week prior. “We’re barreling towards the peak of flu season,” Memorial Hermann infectious disease specialist, Dr. Linda Yancey, said.

Here in Texas, the data shows nearly one in five lab tests are coming back positive, which is also double from the week prior.

HEALTH EXPERTS EXPLAIN HOW QUICKLY YOU COULD EXPERIENCE FLU SYMPTOMS

In a blog from a CLS Health doctor, it states you may not have to wait long to experience flu symptoms after an exposure.

A day after exposure, the article states you may have sudden fever, chills, aches, or a sore throat.

By this weekend, it’s peak illness with a cough, fatigue, and dehydration. By early next week, doctors said your fever should improve, and your energy should return. A week from now, you may have a lingering cough and mild fatigue.

“Keep in mind, you may experience something different,” Yancey said.

“You’re going to have people at each end of the distribution spectrum,” Yancey explained. “So, there are people who could be exposed and get sick the next day. There are some people who could be exposed and not get sick for three weeks.”

HERE’S WHY IT MAY BE TOO LATE FOR THE FLU SHOT

If you were exposed at a holiday gathering, and you’re experiencing symptoms, Yancey said it’s too late for the flu shot.

“It takes about two weeks to get the full benefit from the vaccine,” Yancey said. “So, the faster you get it, the more protected you are.”

Yancey still suggests people get the flu shot. Flu season runs until March. Yancey said it provides about 70% protection against the illness this season.

IF YOU GOT THE FLU, HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO

Houston health department data shows nearly 60% of detected flu cases are in kids ages 5 to 17. If you end up with a positive test or suspect you have the flu, health experts said stay home and take it easy.

“Rest as much as you can,” Yancey said. “Listen to your body. It will tell you what it needs. If you’re thirsty, drink. If you’re tired, sleep. Just give your body a chance to recuperate.”

CLS Health experts also advise taking antiviral medication. If you take it within 48 hours of exposure, they said it can reduce flu recovery time by two days.
