HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A holiday favorite returns to The Wortham Center in November, but this year marks a milestone. The Houston Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” will include a sensory-friendly performance on opening day.
Jennifer Sommers, the Houston Ballet’s academy director, joined Eyewitness News live on Friday morning to preview the performance.
Houston Ballet has been bringing sensory-friendly performances to Houston since 2015, but this will be the first one at The Wortham Center. Sommers said ballet is for all, and the decision to incorporate a sensory-friendly performance into an iconic holiday tradition represents their commitment to inclusivity.
Neurodivergent individuals and their families will be able to experience the art in ways that feel comfortable to them. The house lights will be on, there will be more signage, making noise is acceptable, and audience members can enter and exit the theater as needed.
Houston Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” runs from Nov. 28 through Dec. 28 at The Wortham Center.
