HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston Mayor John Whitmire sat down with ABC13 to discuss the legacy of Anchor Emeritus Dave Ward. Ward died on December 13 at the age of 86.
“Dave has been a friend and a mentor,” Mayor Whitmire said. “He was a great advisor. He was very fair, but he was very transparent and thorough.”
Whitmire first sought and won public office while a student at the University of Houston in the 1970s. He served in the state legislature for decades, first as a member of the House and then as a State Senator. He became the longest serving member of the Senate until leaving to become Mayor of Houston in 2024. Through it all, Dave Ward remained Whitmire’s friend.
“He had a such credibility and integrity through his news coverage,” Whitmire said. “We listened to him and I know for a fact Dave saved lives through his leadership.”
Whitmire said the city will find the proper way to honor Dave Ward though he did not provide details.
