HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston police say an officer was involved in a crash, and the officer’s squad car wound up in a pool as children were swimming.
Police say that the crash happened on White Oak Boulevard in The Heights on Sunday.
ABC13 confirmed with both eyewitnesses and the Houston Fire Department that the police officer was involved in a crash with a white Range Rover prior to the incident.
ABC13 spoke with the owner of the white Range Rover. He said his wife was driving through the intersection of White Oak Drive and Cortlandt Street when the HPD officer “clipped” the vehicle. He said this caused the officer to lose control of the cruiser, smash through a fence, and land partially in the pool.
The woman who owns the home told ABC13 her children were in the pool at the time of the crash. She said they are unharmed.
Senior Captain Ross Elmblade of the Houston Fire Department said to his knowledge the cruiser and the Range Rover were the only two vehicles involved in the collision.
The Houston Police Department declined an on-camera interview. However, a public information officer told ABC13 over the phone that the police cruiser was struck by a vehicle, causing the officer to lose control and land in the pool. When ABC13 presented the Range Rover owner’s version of events, the officer said who hit who first is under investigation.
Elmblade said the officer was the only person injured in the event. They were transported to the hospital with an ankle injury. He described those involved as “really lucky.” He explained, “Where car ended up on the sun ledge, if you’re familiar with that it’s a real shallow part where people hangout in chairs and stuff and if somebody was sitting there, I mean, the unthinkable could have happened.”
The Fire Department’s HAZMAT team also responded to the incident. Elmblade said the cruiser’s gas tank leaked after the crash.
