Houston traffic: Houston Avenue Bridge hit for 73rd time in 2025 after 18-wheeler stalls Monday morning, TXDOT says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Texas Department of Transportation is out yet again at the Houston Avenue Bridge after it was struck again on Monday morning.

According to officials, the call came in around 9:35 a.m. after an 18-wheeler’s load hit the 14-foot-long bridge.

ABC13’s SkyEye flew above the scene and saw that only two lanes of traffic were flowing. TxDOT said multiple lanes were blocked and urged drivers to find alternate routes as crews worked to move the heavy loads and wreckage.

There were no injuries reported at the time.

This incident marks the 73rd time the bridge has been hit in 2025. In an October report by ABC13, officials said the bridge is often hit because drivers ignore their designated routes or lack special permits for trucks carrying loads over 14 feet.

There are several warning signs and a heavy-load detection system along the I-10 corridor, officials said.

To prevent further strikes on the bridge, TXXDOT proposed the White Oak Bayou Elevation Project, which would raise I-10 above the bridge. According to TxDOT, a stretch of I-10 westbound, from the I-45 North Freeway to Houston Avenue, will be reduced to two lanes.

The project has been delayed a second time in 2025 and is set to be finished by 2028.
