HPD looking for gunman after 7-year-old girl shot when fight breaks out at SE Houston apartments on Wenda Street, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A 7-year-old girl is recovering after being shot while standing on the steps of her apartment complex overnight Sunday in southeast Houston, and police are searching for the suspects.

Officials said the shooting happened just after midnight in the 4700 block of Wenda. According to Houston police, several teens were involved in a dispute that escalated into gunfire. Investigators believe at least one group jumped into a dark-colored Jeep and fled the area.

The child was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound and is expected to recover. By daylight, evidence of the shooting remained visible, including bullet damage to nearby apartment buildings.

The girl’s mother and grandmother declined to appear on camera, but shared details of what happened in hopes it would help the investigation. The child told ABC13 she did not know who the shooters were or why they opened fire.

The little girl showed ABC13 her waist area, which remained bandaged up even after she was released from the hospital.

“Me and my cousin were just standing there on the steps, and the boys just shot me,” the girl said with her grandmother standing beside her. When ABC13 reporter Miya Shay asked her if she knew the teenagers, she replied with an emphatic “No!”

The girl was treated at a local hospital and released after a few hours.

Officials did not say what the fight was about that led to shots ringing out. There were no other injuries reported.

The Houston Police Department Major Offenders Division is investigating the case.

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooters’ whereabouts or details about the altercation to contact HPD Major Assaults or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
