JERSEY VILLAGE, Texas (KTRK) — Jersey Village Police say they’re looking for three suspects accused of crashing a stolen vehicle on a freeway during rush hour on Wednesday evening near 290 and Jones Road. Several lanes had to be shut down for hours.
Transtar cameras capture flames erupting from the stolen vehicle. According to the Jersey Village police department, it was the end of the pursuit involving four masked suspects who they say crashed a stolen vehicle.
“The vehicle was reported to be driving recklessly through a residential area. When he was approaching the intersection of Jersey Road and the northwest freeway, an officer in a marked unit observed the vehicle disregarding stop signs and speeding onto the service roads,” Lt. Daniel Rodriguez said.
Once the driver got onto the highway, officers say, he was going so fast he crashed into another vehicle with three people inside.
Jersey Village police told ABC13 that all three people had injuries that were non-life-threatening.
All four suspects, on the other hand, took off, and police were only able to catch the driver. Officers say in addition to wearing masks, the group also had gloves on, which led them to believe they could be connected to similar crimes.
While several westbound lanes had to be shut down, traffic was being diverted.
“It’s just shocking,” said Ann, who lives in a neighborhood nearby.
Ann lives in a neighborhood a few miles away from the crash. She said she was on her way back from church and had to take a detour.
“I went down there around 5:27. I was there in the parking lot because I was picking someone up, and then came home. It was still a mess. I had to drive around the neighborhood,” Ann said.
She says she’s lived in the area for about 50 years and has never seen that much traffic so close to her home.
“That’s so unusual for our neighborhood,” Ann said.
Officers haven’t said how the car was stolen. That’s still part of the investigation. They also haven’t released the identity of the driver yet.
