Man accused in violent home invasions faces charges after his accomplices were killed during robbery attempt: Court documents

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A Houston man accused of participating in a violent robbery crew that impersonated police officers is in custody and facing serious charges, while his two alleged accomplices are dead following a failed home invasion, according to court records.

Andres Hernandez Torres, 29, is being held in the Harris County Jail, charged with aggravated robbery and aggravated kidnapping in connection with one home invasion, but Houston police say they believe he is linked to at least two.

According to court records, he was the getaway driver during the crimes where victims were zip-tied and robbed at gunpoint.

The first home invasion occurred on July 31 at the Sterlingshire Apartments in northeast Houston. Records show the intruders wore bulletproof vests labeled “OFFICER” on the back and tied up a man before robbing him.

Just three weeks later, on Aug. 22, a second home invasion on Bellnole Street in southeast Houston ended fatally for Torres’ alleged partners. Police said the resident, armed and responding to the invasion, shot and killed the two suspects, identified by the Harris County medical examiner as Jerome Folkes and Homero Yado.

Under Texas law, individuals can be charged with felony murder if someone dies during the commission of a felony, even if they didn’t pull the trigger. Legal experts tell ABC13 that Torres could face such a charge, given the circumstances surrounding the second invasion.

At a probable cause hearing on Friday, a court officer noted Torres has a criminal history involving violence. Court records show he admitted to police that he was involved in the crimes but claimed he didn’t know the full extent of his accomplices’ plans. He also told investigators that Yado was his best friend.

Torres, a father of three, remains in jail on bonds totaling $450,000.
