HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — An arrest has been made in a murder that’s sat unsolved for more than nine years.
Henry Ibanez was arrested on Wednesday and charged with the 2016 murder of Emanuel Carrillo outside a north Houston house, according to court records.
“I thought that this was never gonna happen, that we were not gonna get this phone call that he’s already in jail,” the victim’s sister, Lilly Hinojosa, said.
Carrillo was shot dead in a driveway on McDaniel Street near the Hardy Toll Road on May 21, 2016.
Another man was also hit but survived his injuries.
Carrillo’s family said he had gone to a friend’s house to help his friend’s sister, whose ex-boyfriend had shown up and was threatening to set a car on fire.
“He’s a person that will help anybody and will do anything for anybody,” Hinojosa said,
At the time, police said an argument ensued between two groups of people prior to the shooting.
Hinojosa said neighbors told her one man emerged from a sunroof and began firing.
“Why? Why you just, you know, shot at everybody? I mean, he didn’t do nothing to you,” the victim’s brother, Oscar Carrillo, said.
In 2017, a year after the shooting, court records show Ibanez was convicted of discharging a firearm after shooting in the direction of a different man. He was sentenced to two days in jail.
As far as Carrillo’s family knows, he and Ibanez were total strangers. Investigators haven’t provided a motive for the shooting.
“I guess he didn’t have a heart. He just – he just wanted to kill somebody ’cause my shooting in the air, you’re gonna kill somebody,” Hinojosa said.
Carrillo left behind a wife, two daughters, and a son.
Ibanez is being held on a $100,000 bond.
