Man killed in jealous rage by two shooters in apparent case of mistaken identity, HPD says

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Police say an armed man who thought he was confronting his girlfriend’s boyfriend had actually knocked at the wrong door.

Laderrick Dixon Jr. was charged Monday with the Nov. 21 murder of 23-year-old Kevin Fowler at a short-term rental on Orebo Street in Acres Homes.

“He was just going to hang out, to get away,” said Fowler’s cousin, Portia Patterson.

Police say Dixon and another man went to the house looking for Dixon’s girlfriend when Dixon became convinced Fowler was having a relationship with her.

Investigators say Dixon didn’t seem to realize the house was divided into two separate units and that he’d knocked at the wrong one.

“You’re minding your business, and this is the end result,” Patterson said.

As Fowler was driving away with three of his friends, police say Dixon and the other man opened fire on Fowler’s car.

None of his passengers was injured, but Fowler was struck in the head and died at the hospital three days later.

“He didn’t have any kids. He was only 23 years old, so I feel like it’s just, it’s just not fair,” said Fowler’s sister, Stormi Gayle, who said Fowler loved cutting hair and trading cars.

Dixon was arrested Saturday for violating the terms of a deferred adjudication deal in a 2024 weapons case, according to court records.

Investigators soon connected him to the murder and added two additional charges on Monday.

Detectives are asking for the public’s help identifying a second suspect described as a young, thin, black man.

“What would possess you to just open fire? Like, why? I guess that’s the biggest question. Why?” Patterson said.

Anyone with information about this case can call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
