Man shot himself during chase following traffic stop on Huffman Cleveland Road in northeast Harris County, DPS says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — The Department of Public Safety said they are investigating after a traffic stop in northeast Harris County took a deadly turn.

The incident happened on Huffman Cleveland Rd near FM 2100 on Thursday.

SkyEye was on the scene, where investigators were seen walking around a red pickup truck with the door open and a wheelchair up against the tailgate.

DPS said shortly before 1 p.m. on Thursday that a trooper pulled a man over for having an expired registration. The driver stopped and investigators said the trooper ran the driver’s information.

Eyewitness News was told several warrants came up for the man, and DPS said the trooper ordered the man out of his car. The man then allegedly told police he wasn’t going to jail, got out of the car, and ran before law enforcement said he was pulling out a gun and shot himself.

Investigators said the man still had a pulse and he was taken to a hospital in Kingwood, where he was pronounced dead.

DPS said no one was detained or questioned, though a man was seen being helped out of a law enforcement vehicle, into a wheelchair, and he returned up the driveway where the investigation happened.

This occurred not far from Huffman ISD’s Eagle Ridge Elementary. The district told ABC13 that, out of an abundance of caution, they placed the school on a temporary hold while law enforcement managed the scene and notified parents, until police gave the all-clear.

A DPS spokesperson was not able to say what the warrants were for.
