New take on twisted ’90s thriller ‘The Hand that Rocks the Cradle’ stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Maika Monroe

HOLLYWOOD — There is a new take on a thriller that first captivated movie audiences 33 years ago. It’s “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” and it promises to be a very different version of the original.

“It’s a very different film. It’s really, I think, taking it to a very current, modern place in all aspects,” said Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Winstead plays a mom in need of a nanny. Maika Monroe plays the young woman she selects for the job. Like the original, there is a dark twist at play. It’s just not the same twist.

“We’ve talked about how great the energy of the ’90s thriller is so fun and fantastic, and we all love it,” said Winstead. “But that gets to kind of exist in that place and now we have this that kind of exists in our current time.”

“I was, like, really ready, I think, for something different. And this role was something, like, completely different for me and it was an absolute blast,” said Monroe.

Filmmaker Michelle Garza Cervera was tasked with taking an old favorite and making it her own.

“Just the idea of re-making that movie was so intimidating. So at first, I was really reluctant, you know, because it’s touching such an iconic and legendary film,” said Cervera. “When I know that I could build a whole movie that could stand on its own, that had its own identity, I was, like, OK, I could work on this project.”

“At the end of the day, you’re still going to be totally creeped out and terrified, which is what you want from a film like this,” said Winstead.

“The Hand that Rocks the Cradle” is streaming now on Hulu.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
