HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Pavement collapsed in a residential neighborhood causing a deep hole in a road, according to Houston Public Works. The department said it was caused by an underground infrastructure issue.
HPW said the water leak and pavement collapse were reported to them this morning through 311, and that Houston Water crews were on scene.
The hole looked to be more than 5 feet deep and about 10 feet wide when an ABC13 crew arrived. At one point, the hole was completely filled with water. It is located at Sylvan Road in the Idylwood neighborhood. People in the area said two cars fell into the hole at different times.
ABC13 spoke with a man who said he was a driver of one of the cars. He described how he was scared when he fell in and the water went inside his car. Video from a neighbor showed several people trying to help.
“The car just kind of sunk into the hole and it’s sort of sticking out a little bit. There are people trying to help get it out and it was just wild,” Idylwood resident Candice Hurtado said.
On Saturday morning, Harris County Precinct 6 said the water was shut off until it could be repaired.
The situation prompted people in a nearby apartment complex to find water elsewhere. ABC13 saw people taking water from an open fire hydrant. Those residents said they would use it to bathe themselves and to fill their toilets, since they said crews told them they could be without water for up to 3 days.
Public Works said it expected repairs to be completed late Saturday evening, as long as there are no complications. The department said water would be restored once they isolate the source of the leak, which could be sometime Saturday.
Ultimately, neighbors said they’d like to restore some normalcy again and get access to this road soon.
“We have traffic coming in from the school and the apartments and people going to work, and these contractors come in with these huge trailers, with equipment on them. I don’t look forward to Monday because I have to take my grandkids to school,” Idylwood resident Angelita Ayala said.
