MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A search warrant shows new details on what investigators found inside the home of a Montgomery County woman accused of shooting her four children.
When investigators went inside the home in Porter, their initial intent was to find a 17-year-old who was believed to be another child of Oninda Romelus, according to an initial search warrant.
The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office told ABC13 all their evidence indicates Romelus only has four children. Court records showed they did not find the teen inside, but instead they found a list of other items, including a box of ammunition, several phones, and nearly a dozen tablets, laptops, and computers.
But it doesn’t stop there. Another search warrant was issued for a counterfeit and fraud investigation after detectives said they found a large number of Social Security cards and identification documents in the home.
The second search warrant said, “the counterfeit identification documents were in various stages of manufacture bearing different names, states, and photographs.”
Detectives said they seized more than two dozen Social Security cards, over 45 identification cards, and more than a dozen credit cards, along with other items.
The Montgomery County DA’s office tells ABC13 that Romelus is not currently charged in that case.
However, Romelus does currently face two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the case with her children.
Search warrants said surveillance video from a house across the street showed multiple people, including children, getting into a car around 2:39 a.m. on Saturday.
Roughly two hours later, the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office said Romelus called deputies to a gas station.
They arrived to find a 13-year-old boy slumped over in the passenger seat with gunshot wounds and three other children in the backseat also shot, according to court records.
In those documents, Romelus was described as being paranoid during her interview at the county jail.
She allegedly said, “Instead of them doing it to me, I’m going to do it to them.”
The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services told ABC13 it is investigating this case.
“Ms. Romelus has had contact with CPS on one other occasion. Details of that interaction are confidential but will be included in a public Child Fatality Report when our investigation is complete,” DFPS Spokesperson Melissa Lanford said.
As investigators try to piece together what led up to the tragedy, they’re also looking at video footage from doorbell cameras at the home to show a timeline of events.
According to the search warrant, it could take several days or weeks to analyze.
Romelus remains in the Brazoria County Jail on a $14 million bond.
