HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — An investigation is underway after a man was shot to death by an off-duty HCSO deputy while trying to protect his child inside a car in northeast Harris County, according to authorities.
Deputies responded to a weapons disturbance at 2:45 p.m. in the 5300 block of Treewood Drive, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
According to law enforcement, investigators believe that the deputy’s child was in the backseat inside the vehicle when the suspect attempted to enter the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
Authorities said that the off-duty HCSO deputy discharged his firearm and hit the suspect, fearing the child’s life was in danger. The suspect was found on the front lawn of the home next to a vehicle, authorities said.
Officials said that the suspect was taken to a hospital after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, where he was pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s office stated that the off-duty deputy was a four-year veteran of the HCSO, assigned to the patrol division.
