Texas City officer arrested on DWI after car found stopped on Gulf Freeway

LA MARQUE, Texas (KTRK) — Texas City police are staying silent after one of their officers was arrested for DWI in La Marque on Monday morning.

Joseph Tinney, 38, joined the Texas City Police Department in December, state law enforcement records show.

La Marque police say multiple drivers called around 3:30 a.m. about a car stopped in the far-right lane of the Gulf Freeway near Main Street. It’s an area that’s under construction and has no shoulders.

Police identified Tinney as the driver. They say he refused to perform a field sobriety test and was taken to the hospital for a blood draw before being booked in the Galveston County Jail.

Records show Texas City police arrested Tinney for drunk driving in 2011. He later pleaded to a lesser charge of reckless driving and was ordered to pay a $200 fine.

Texas City’s police chief and assistant police chief didn’t respond to emails seeking comment. A number listed for Tinney went to voicemail, and he didn’t respond to a text message.

Records show the job with Texas City is his first and only law enforcement job in Texas. It’s unknown what his employment status is in light of Monday’s arrest.
