TEXAS CITY, Texas (KTRK) — Two employees who make up Texas City’s communications department were arrested and are now facing third-degree felony charges for online impersonation, according to court records.
“I was shocked that it was an actual employee of the mayor. I was surprised, really surprised,” said La Marque City Councilmember Joseph Lowry.
Court documents reveal the first employee arrested, Derek Miller, pretended to be Lowry on Facebook, writing “my business isn’t doing so well, so I’m monetizing my social media.”
The other alleged post detailed a female employee facing false accusations.
“I’m ashamed to say I used to make false accusations against her, partially because I’ve always struggled with racism, but also because I find intelligent females intimidating.”
The second city employee arrested and charged is Communications Director Jennifer Laird, who is also charged with online impersonation, accordig to court documents.
Records reveal that she exchanged texts with Miller to curate a post about Lowry, writing that she “was not only aware of the Facebook profile, but was involved in the creation of posts and authoring posts herself.”
While the La Marque elected official said he’s feuded with Texas City, and even recently faced a censure, prosecutors say “the posts were done, so in an effort to harm the reputation and persona of an elected official.”
“Who accesses that account, who sees it, it’s very worrisome and bothersome to me because what if that account is getting information on stuff that’s nefarious activities inside a city hall,” said Lowry.
On Friday, the Texas City mayor’s office confirmed to ABC13 that both individuals are still employed with the city, also releasing a statement stating that everyone deserves due process until proven otherwise.
But Lowry said he disagrees.
“They should have been terminated, and for the taxpayers of Texas City to pay for criminals to be employed here right inside of city hall is pretty shameful,” he said.
ABC13 attempted to contact both Miller and Laird. Miller did not wish to comment, and we were unable to contact Laird. However, records indicate that she is no longer in jail after her arrest on Thursday.
