Monday, October 6, is the last day to register to vote for the November 4 election. There is a lot on the ballot for every voter in the state.
Everybody’s ballot will look different depending on where they live, but all 19 million registered voters in Texas will share one thing in common- the 17 proposed constitutional amendments put on the ballot by the state legislature and Governor Abbott.
The proposed amendments include a measure that would increase the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000 to offset some of the drastic increases in property taxes.
Another would eliminate the possibility of bail for some felonies, including murder, capital murder, trafficking, and other aggravated crimes.
Plus, the creation of a Texas Water Fund would help pay for the state’s increasing water infrastructure needs.
Voters will choose whether to allocate $3 billion to create the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, establishing the Dementia Prevention and Research Fund.
There are also other items, which are specific to where you live.
There is a special election for Congressional District 18 to replace the late Sylvester Turner. There are 16 candidates.
Also, there are school board elections in Cy-Fair, HISD, Aldine, Klein, New Caney, and Splendora.
There are city council races, too. There’s a special election for At-Large Position 4 in Houston, and races in Baytown, Bellaire, Missouri City, and The Woodlands Township.
Conroe has several measures that address how its city government operates, most notably changing to a city manager/city council form of governance.
There are a lot of bond measures across our area that would increase taxes if approved by voters.
It’s expected that relatively few Texans will make these decisions. Two years ago, the turnout for an off-year election was under 15%. Four years ago, fewer than 1 out of 10 registered voters cast a ballot.
