“Totally worth it!” The 11-year-old who missed school for his first playoff game

HUMBLE, Texas (KTRK) — Houston Texans season ticket holders for ten years, this postseason marked a first for Sarah Lopez of Humble and her family. They were able to attend their first road game, and it was a great one.

The Texans and the Steelers in the wild card round in Pittsburgh.

“I lost my voice. I was screaming a lot.” Lopez said. “The few of us that were there, we were just trying to make a statement.”

Her 11-year-old cousin, Easton Rodriguez, made his own statement. He created a poster before the game that read, “Missed school for my first playoff game.”

“I missed Monday and Tuesday. It was totally worth it,” Easton said.

Photos of their team spirit quickly spread across social media, including the Texans’ official Facebook page.

“During the game, Easton’s mom, I told her, something’s happening because my watch was going off,” Sarah remembers. “And she got the message that, hey, the Texans posted us, you know, we went viral.”

That viral moment also included a reel of the Texans gifting Easton a signed Derek Stingley Jr. jersey.

“I was yelling to my mom, I almost lost my voice at first because I was like, ‘Mom, I got a signed Stingley jersey!” Easton shared.

The 11-year-old is a student at Crossbar Academy. He was pretty popular when he returned to school this week.

“When I went into the class, they were like, Easton, can I have your autograph? You’re famous.” Easton said.

And the cherry on top, Sarah and Easton witnessed the Texans win in Pittsburgh. The team advances to the AFC Divisional Round, where they will face the New England Patriots in Foxborough.

Sarah, still energized by that unforgettable experience in Pittsburgh, plans to go to Foxborough this Sunday. This time, taking her older son, a high school sophomore, who could not miss school on Monday.
