HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A viewer video sent to ABC13 is raising questions about protocols for bus drivers.
The viewer video shows a student nearly getting hit by a passing Houston Police Department cruiser after getting off the Alief ISD school bus.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon on South Drive in the Alief area.
However, at the time, it shows the flashing lights and stop sign on the bus were not activated.
The man who got this all on video tells ABC13 he also took action by honking and flashing his lights when he saw this unfold and said he thought it could’ve been worse.
“It could’ve, it could’ve. I don’t know whether if I was honking – if the police vehicle heard my honking or probably, he saw me flashing my lights that’s why he slowed down. But if you take a look at the video, I believe that the bus driver was super wrong,” said Emmy.
HPD said they were responding to an assault in progress call at the time and the officer followed protocol since the flashing lights for the bus were not activated.
“I wouldn’t say it’s the police officer fault, I just believe the bus driver – because the officer wouldn’t have known whether the kids were exiting the bus or not,” said Emmy.
Alief ISD sent ABC13 the following statement.
There are two buses that drop off students on South Drive.
To ensure buses drop off students door side one bus drops off towards Wilcrest and the other school bus drops off students heading toward the beltway.
When unloading students, bus drivers must activate their stop sign and red lights to notify vehicles that the bus is preparing to unload students.
Once activated, vehicles should not pass a school bus until the driver removes the stop arm and the flashing red lights.
As precautionary measure, the transportation department will pull bus video to better assess the situation.
Once video is obtained we can better understand this situation.
The safety of our students is of the highest importance.
