HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A woman is dead after a fire broke out at a nursing home overnight in the Independence Heights area, according to the Houston Police Department.
The fire started at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the facility off Janisch in the city’s northwest side. Authorities said the fire began in the victim’s room.
While officials have not disclosed additional information, Eyewitness News was on scene when the victim’s family was heard yelling and demanding the fire department shut down the facility.
At the scene, officials were seen bagging and taking off with evidence. Records from the Texas Health and Human Services show the facility received a violation two years ago for failing to properly maintain its sprinkler system, which is a fire code issue. However, records state the issue was fixed within a matter of days.
According to the facility’s website, it is both a rehabilitation facility and a nursing home.
ABC13 is working on gathering more information and learning if other residents were injured.
Despite the fire, on Sunday morning, the facility was still open and operating as employees were seen arriving.
